2015 Goals an Update

When I made my goals for this year, I knew I was choosing goals that I could share updates for; a sense of accountability. Well, since it’s March (already?!) I’m sharing with you my 2015 goals update.

An Update on My 2015 Goals l frogslilypad.net

Continental knitting – what I can I say, I have the knitting, purling and my favorite bind-off down pat. Knit/Purl 2 together and increases are  being worked on at the moment. Transitioning over has helped me just about finish this beautiful afghan for my husband.

When I say, just about, I only have 4 ½ inches on the last block to finish up. Sadly, I ran out of yarn and am waiting for the skein to be delivered. The pattern for this afghan can be found HERE. The only thing I did differently, I enlarged it by using an extra 40 blocks.

Pain de Mie bread – The recipe that came with the pan, I gave it ago. Well, let’s just say this recipe did not turn out like I had hoped. I’m thinking it was because my poor KitchenAid just could not knead the dough like it needed to. The poor thing has been retired to its box and is now enjoying retirement in the basement.

My sweet husband had to work on President’s Day. There was enough overtime worked for that one day, he bought me this –

All I can say is I am amazed! I’m amazed at the difference in my pizza dough I made on Friday. My sweet son even complimented on the crust. I can’t wait to make a loaf of bread this week!

Quilting – Oh my! Picking out fabric is something I like to do in person. I like being able to touch it, unfold several folds off the bolt to look at it, and smell it. Yes, I love smelling new fabric. Relying on pictures of reproduction fabrics just about caused me to give up on this goal because I couldn’t see it in person.  Because of this, I spent several hours for several days researching and learning. I had to learn all about jellyrolls because that is what the quilt patterns called for. (Heaven knows, I don’t want to make a mountain out of a molehill by buying fabric by the yard to try to do this.) Knowing I was going to make a larger quilt from what the patterns were designed for, I had to use my nonexistent math ability to figure it out. Thankfully, my sister sat up in the wee hours of the morning with me on the phone talking me through it.

Since there are so many options on reproduction fabrics, I chose to buy two jellyrolls from Keepsake Quilting. These fabrics are beautiful! As I was unrolling them, I easily imagined the fabrics as dresses during that era.  These are just a few of the colors that came in the roll.

How are your goals coming along? Are you still pushing right along with them or have you thrown in the towel?

My TO DO LIST for the Week

This is the week I look forward to in our home education journey - our week off.  While I'm not standing in the corner drooling and twisting my hair into pigtails like a half crazed person, I am enjoying this week as my deep cleaning week.  I've written about our weeks off before to help battle burnout, and how I spend time cleaning, so I don't have to "spring clean" every year.  I thought I would share My TO DO LIST for the Week since it is so different from my normal weeks.

Spring cleaning one room every six weeks cuts down on clutter and keeps a house more tidy than letting it all go until the spring.  Who really wants to be cooped up inside spending a week cleaning when you could be out enjoying something more enjoyable? Not me, we don’t get a good lengthy spring season here, so when the weather allows, I’m enjoying the yard or time with my family.
MY TO DO LIST FOR THE WEEK l frog'slilypad.net

As you can see this week is mostly about the kitchen. I began removing 50+ years worth of old shelf liner last week.(I’m keeping my fingers crossed; we’re supposed to strip our cabinets when it warms up so we can paint them.) I still have a few more shelves to remove the horrible stuff from. Please, don’t get me started on sticky shelf liner when there is a whole line of non sticky liner on the market. Whatever you do, don’t layer the mess or have the idea of painting around it!  Yes, I have had to deal with both of those and it is NO FUN!

Yesterday, I spent the day doing my normal weekly house cleaning.  I even worked ahead on Tuesday and Wednesday’s chores, so I could spend several days deep cleaning the kitchen and reorganizing the pantry. Working ahead keeps me from feeling overwhelmed knowing something needs to be completed.

This week is also school planning week. I would love to be one of these moms who have everything ready and on file for the year, but I’m not.  I like planning for six weeks into the future and no more since you never know what can come up.  Once I complete my deep cleaning, I’ll spend time Thursday/Friday filing away paperwork and making lesson plans.

What are your plans for the week? I’d love to hear about them.

Work Ethics: Teaching Our Children

After reading an article about a young person making rude comments about a new job they had not even started and was fired for it, got me to thinking about Work Ethics and teaching our children to have them. Not everyone shares the same work ethics just as we all don't share the same beliefs, so I'm not sharing a list of ethics to teach.

The Entitlement Era is here to stay, I’m afraid. It has been long coming down through the generations; parents wanting to be easier on little Sally or to lighten the load on little Johnny.  While it is only natural for a parent to want their child’s life to not be full of hardships, we need to back off and allow them some hard times. ~ It builds character!

Work Ethics: Teaching Our Children

Young people mirror what is taught in the home. Little smart-alecky comments about Smelly Sam in the next cubicle or the “I should have his paycheck since I’m doing his job anyway” remarks where our children can hear them, not only teaches them it is alright to grumble but to be disrespectful of others.

I worked several unpleasant jobs in my lifetime. The ones I had during my college years, oh my! While those were minimum wage jobs, I never felt the need to boycott a day of work to prove I was better than what I was being paid. My goodness, it was a minimum wage job, why would I think the job was worth $15 an hour when it most definitely was not.

I had one particular job if I could do it all over, I would never have worked there.  I was over worked and under paid and not appreciated one bit and was warned, “Don’t even dare ask for a raise”. I’ll never forget the comment, “You better be here on Monday, I can’t afford to pay you sick leave,” while picking up my paycheck during my vacation week which I spent in bed extremely ill. This woman owned several childcare centers and could not keep any staff members longer than a year or two except for a couple of faithful older ladies who worked in the baby room.

During that year, I was reminded that my father spent years working for people like that woman. Never did I hear a negative word about the owners of the companies. My dad left work at the door when he came home in the evenings. If he had anything bad to say about someone he worked with or for, I don’t recall ever hearing it. I was reminded, this woman was my boss and I had to respect her for that.

I was also taught to stand up for myself and not be bullied by others, bosses included. The day I turned in my notice at this particular job, the woman came across as horrified! She started trying to explain she was in the process of moving me up to an older class since I was going to school to be a teacher (something I heard for six months); she became so flustered and angry at me that she told me to get out. I gladly got my things and left and never looked back. To this day, I never had to use her as a reference, nor have I acknowledged my time of employment there with anyone outside my family.

As a homemaker, I have jobs I do not care for. While cleaning the toilet is not the most glamorous job, I do it. I clean it for cleanliness, hygiene, and odor control. I have even begun to pass this job on to my son. While I know he is not going to clean the bathroom like I would, he knows it’s an unpleasant job that is required. When I check on his progress, I don’t always tell him he is doing a fantastic job, in fact, I point out areas where he has missed. I do this because life is not always a bowl of cherries.

Young people need to learn they are not too good to work a minimum wage job, whether it is flipping burgers, washing dishes, or just helping where they are needed. Be willing and eager to workMinimum wage and entry level jobs are not meant to become a lifelong career. They are a low rung on the ladder to become successful in life.

I asked my husband to read this post and give me his opinion (something that is done for every post). He did just that and summed it up in a few short words. If you want more out of life, you have to work for it. The harder you work, the more profitable you will become.  Don't like the minimum wage? BETTER YOURSELF!

Young people are not going to learn work ethics from TV, social media or YouTube. They are going to learn how to work from you, the parent. It is up to you to do your job in raising a young person who will know how to work and want more out of life than being given everything.

Valentine's Day 5 {Frugal} Date Ideas

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Are you thinking of ways to enjoy the day with your special Valentine? If you are on a budget, you can still enjoy this special day with the one you love. With a little preplanning and creativity you can have a perfect date.

While Valentine’s Day has become a large money-maker for stores and companies, you don’t have to spend a lot to show you care. In fact, I don’t know anyone who would not appreciate a hand written letter telling how much they are loved. Instead of 20 pounds of chocolate, a regular size candy bar wrapped with a ribbon shows just as much love without all that extra candy.

Most of us want to spend time with the one we love on Valentine’s Day. Sometimes there is no way around the budget for an extravagant meal and gift, but making this a special day can be done.

 Valentine's Day 5 {Frugal} Date Ideas

Dinner and a movie night in – put the little ones to bed early and/or lock the teens in their rooms. ;)  A quiet dinner and a movie at home is a wonderful way to spend an evening together.

*Go out on the cheap – take a drive around town, stop for an ice cream or a coffee and spend quality time talking, just the two of you.

*Spend time at a local bookstore – grab a cup of coffee or tea and find the comfy chairs in the bookstore and spend an hour or two reading and browsing books together.

*Star gazing – I can't think of a better and more romantic way to spend a quiet evening together. If you don’t happen to live where it is warm, don’t forget a blanket and some hot cocoa.

Picnic – plan a lunch time picnic at a local park. If the park has a lake with ducks, don’t forget to bring a bag of bread to feed them.

While Valentine’s Day comes during the week most of the time and job schedules are a mess, why not postpone your special day until the weekend where you both will have a more relaxed time to spend together.

As you can see, you don’t have to break the bank to enjoy a wonderful Valentine’s Day.

**These are just a few of my favorite ways to spend time with my husband.

Five Benefits of Self Learning

When I began our home education journey, I knew the main goal (after all the other learning) I wanted to achieve was self learning. After twelve years of classroom teaching, I had had it up to my eyeballs with spoon fed learners and I was in no way going to have my son be that kind of young person. Don’t get me wrong, I know not all students who attend school are spoon fed, but the majority of them are and it is not all their fault. No, I didn't throw my son into the deep end and expect him to come out on top without any guidance. In fact, it took almost all the elementary years to get to the point where self learning could be enjoyed.

5 Benefits of Self Learning

I'll never forget how it only took a Science book to start the ball rolling. When the weekly assignment sheet was given, my precious son began looking at all the pictures and reading ahead of what was planned for that particular day. He even came to me several times that morning telling me things he had learned. While I was impressed at his learning and excitement, I was a little fearful he would realize he was behind for the day and shut down. I'd be lying if I told you I was happy-go-lucky about the not getting everything finished for that day. I mean I still struggle with the classroom teacher mindset and still follow a schedule for certain things. Well, he didn't shut down, he came to me and asked since he completed all of that week’s science reading and written work could he do his Language Arts and Math for the day and be finished. :) I knew we were on to something good at that moment. Over the years, I have been able to loosen the reins quite a bit. While I do go behind my son and make sure he has everything completed for the week, he has learned how to correct his work and make the necessary changes so I will know when a mistake was made. For the past two weeks, we've dealt with mostly all self learning in our school. While I was sick for several days and then having to recover from surgery, my precious son knew what he had to work on and he completed it on his own. There was no tug of war on deciding whether to do school or not, it was completed with no worries. While there are many benefits to self learning, these are five are things I've seen in my own son and other self learning young people.

Five Benefits of Self Learning

  • A young person becomes an independent thinker - In today’s society, they need to think for themselves without being led in more than one direction.

  • A young person learns to accept responsibility and becomes accountable - Excuses for not reaching one’s potential are eliminated.

  • A young person gains the freedom to learn without boundaries - In this day of technology, nothing should stand in the way of one’s learning.

  • A young person develops self confidence and perseverance - With a continuance of self learning, a young person will grow to become a more mature and productive adult.

  • A young person will be more than ready for college because of motivation and planning ahead - The real world workload for college won’t be such a scary thing to deal with, when motivation and pre-planning is a natural instinct.

  • It’s never too late to start your child on the road to self learning. With a little time and perseverance, your child can become a self learner, also. Depending on their age, start with one or two subjects and move on from there. Don't forget, you can only eat an elephant, one bite at a time.

    Goals for 2015

I have been thinking about GOALS FOR 2015 for the past two months. I don’t make resolutions, but I do make goals. There is just something about the words New Year’s Resolutions that brings the feeling of defeat for me and I don't like that.  Last year I made a goal for myself and I actually made it. It took me all year but I finally did it. I switched over from being an English knitter to a Continental knitter.  Some of you are probably saying what? English knitting is when the yarn is worked by the right hand, while Continental knitting is where the yarn is being worked by the left hand.

    Goals for 2015

My first goal for this year is to master Continental knitting. Continental knitting was a goal I made several years ago because I really want to learn to crochet edges on knitted items. Over the past year, I spent time trying to get the hang of crocheting and could never do it. I remembered a lady I met at a church while we were on the road who said it is harder to go from knitting to crocheting than vice versa because of the way the yarn is held. You know what? She was right, at least in my case.

I’ve been busily working on finishing up my husband’s afghan I started a hundred years ago, and I’m almost finished with it.  The blocks in this afghan are what I’ve been using to help me in my transition. Practice, repeated practice is all it took. A video I saw put out by Jimmy Beans Wool said it can take about three weeks to get the motion going and being comfortable with it. It took  a full three weeks for me because I spent about six days trying to get the hang of how I hold the yarn.

My second goal is near to my heart.  Bread baking is an enjoyable, relaxing homemaking skill for me. While I have never really liked any of my bread for sandwiches, we eat it anyway. Last year, after researching, I realized I needed an actual sandwich bread recipe, so I have decided Pain de Mie is the way to go. My southern friends think of Sunbeam bread, you know the l-o-n-g two pound loaf of cottony softness. I have a new Pullman bread pan I got for Christmas and I can’t wait to make the perfect loaf.

And lastly, my third goal is something I have tried before and failed horribly at it. Actually, I was successful one time ~

Quilting! I can’t believe I’m actually saying this, but I am. A friend of mine has been an encouragement to me by posting her blocks on Facebook when she gets them finished. Because I’m not in love with the new look of quilts, I’m going in a different direction with my first one. Something that will be easy to put together, a Civil War era  block quilt with reproduction fabrics. I have a couple of patterns I’m working on to enlarge to have the right size for a queen size bed. I have my fabrics picked out and can’t wait to order them next month.

Did you make goals for 2015? If so, I'd love to hear or read about them, leave a comment with your goals or a link so I can visit and read about your goals.

Peace:My Word and Verse for 2015

Choosing a word for this year has been hard for me. I had another word I had wanted to work on and even bought a book with the word in the title, but anytime I tried to write about it, it just would not come together. While I know that word is something I need to work on, there is another word I feel the Lord wants me to deal with in my life. MY WORD FOR 2015 is PEACE.

Peace: My One Word for 2015

Did you know there are 400 verses in the Bible that have the word PEACE? While some deal with the PEACE offerings with the children of Israel, others deal with living a PEACEful life, someone holding their PEACE (tongue control), and others talk about the PEACE that only God can give.

I wrote about PEACE in the past. Every time I come across Hebrews 12:14, I can’t help but focus on the words without which no man shall see the Lord.  When we are not PEACEful, the Lord is not being seen in us. As Christians, Christ is supposed to be seen in everything we do.

As a wife and mom, I am the pot stirrer in our home. I’m either going to forcefully stir the pot for more heat and out of control actions, or I’m going to easily stir the pot for a more peaceful outcome. I will go ahead and tell you because I want to be truthful; I like to forcefully stir the pot sometimes. I want to be Mrs. It and come out on top. This is NOTHING to be PROUD of!

We’ve all heard the saying, “If Momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy”; while many will giggle or smile at this saying, I have come to the conclusion that this is just SAD! I want my husband and son happy.  I want our home to be the peaceful, safe haven for my husband when he comes in from work. I want my son to look back on his childhood years and think fondly of the moments that were created. I want to be remembered as a PEACE living wife and mother. I don’t want to be the reason for Satan to enter our home and tear it apart.

Those who live in our homes know the REAL us. They see us every day during good moments and even our disturbing moments.  Our husbands and children are the ones who are going to either rotate around us, or they are going to push away from us as far as they can.  I want my husband and son to rotate around me.

Stirring the pot PEACEfully is not always easy. There are times when situations come up and anger flares or defeat, sadness, and even discouragement rises to the top. But with the Lord’s help, we can be more PEACEful.

The Lord blesses the PEACEmakers according to Matthew 5:9. I want to be a PEACEmaker; I want the Lord’s blessings on my life. I want others to see Christ in me.

Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.

Peace: My One Word for 2015
