A Whirlwind

This has been a crazy busy last couple of days. We have spent more hours in the garden then in the house. I have had to be out early, before the sun starts beating down on the garden, so I could be back inside when it gets really hot. I can't let the inside work go. I mean, I could but then I would never want to come back inside. I guess, I would have to just move in with Toby our beagle, if he would have me.

Our Garden Update:

Our squash have just about finished running their course. I have about 30 bags of squash in the freezer. We have lost count on the baskets that my husband took to the market to sell. Now, we are beginning the process of removing the plants.

We have tons of green beans coming in. I canned 11 quarts tonight. This is a total of 17 jars put up. There is something about the sound of the canner as it is processing and the smell that the green beans make as they are being canned. It reminds me so much of my Maw Maw when she would can.

I really need to get a picture of the tomato plants. These plants are so loaded down, that the bushes have decided that they can't stand it any longer. So, they have fallen down on the job. We have Roma tomatoes all over the place. I'm hoping that we don't end up with a critter eating any.(About four years ago, we found a turtle in our tomatoes, when we were pulling up the plants at the end of summer.) For now, we are waiting for all of them to ripen.

This week has been Cub Scouts Twilight camp for Monkey. He has really enjoyed going. Tonight was the closing ceremony and the retiring of the flag. This was a really neat thing to see. An older Boy Scout, read about what the American flag stood for. And why the flag is cut apart before it was burnt. I had my camera, but when Monkey was putting his red strip into the fire, my camera froze up for some reason, so I missed it. But I do have a few pictures, that I'll have to post later.

Last night, I made homemade Mayonnaise. If you have never had any, I have to tell you that it is WAY BETTER than any store bought product out there. Of course, the only draw back is that you don't have any preservatives, so it won't last as long in the refrigerator, as the store bought. I promise, the flavor out ways the idea of preservatives. You can find the recipe HERE.

Outside my window... The sun is shining and it is hot!

I am thinking...About all the gathering from the garden and canning that I have to work on this week.

I am thankful for... Our freedoms - We have too many that we take for granted.

From the learning rooms... This week, we have Cub Scouts Twilight Camp, so there is a lot of outdoorsy learning going on.

From the kitchen... I'll be working on canning. I made the best cream cheese lemon bars. Trying not to eat too many.

I am wearing... My pj's, since I slept in this morning. I'll be donning my gardening clothes soon, to be out in the garden.

I am creating... Pot holders and handle holders, along with jellies to give as Christmas gifts.

I am going... To drop my son off at camp, then on to the library and then church tonight.

I am reading... I just finished A Promise To Believe In by Tracie Peterson. I'm browsing through Laundry: The Home Comforts Book of Laundry by Cheryl Mendelson.

I am hoping... That it rains.

I am hearing... The air conditioning turning on.

Around the house... I'm trying to stay ahead on all my cleaning, so I don't get behind while I'm busy with the garden and such.

One of my favorite things... FUDGE!!!
A few plans for the rest of the week... Nothing much going on outside of the things around here, other than Twilight Camp for Monkey.

FOR TODAY... Wednesday, June 17, 2009

Outside my window... Is overcast. Hopefully it will rain. We sure do need it. The birds are chirping and Toby (our dog) is knocking on the back door, to let Monkey know he is ready to play. Yep, Toby knocks with his tail or he will scratch the door.

I am thinking... Sometimes you just can't please everyone. So why let it bother you.

I am thankful for... I'm thankful for a husband who loves me, no matter what.

From the learning rooms... Actually, I'm doing the learning. I've been learning all that I can about the Charlotte Mason approach.

From the kitchen... I'll be making jelly today, along with some homemade blueberry muffins.

I am wearing... Yellow Eeyore Pj's.

I am creating... A Peaceful Home -trying to anyway.

I am going... To church tonight.

I am reading... For enjoyment - A Promise to Believe In by Tracie Peterson.

I am hoping... That it rains.

I am hearing... The ceiling fan .

Around the house... I'm caught up and ahead on cleaning, since I have canning and baking to do today.

One of my favorite things... The look of excitement on my son's face, when he is ready for VBS.

A few plans for the rest of the week... Not sure, I do have to go to the library.

Here is picture thought I am sharing... Well, I seem to have really downsized my pictures, trying to keep them little for posting. They are so small, you need a magnifying glass to even see them. Just as soon as I figure out what I did, I'll try and post them.

A Garden Update...

Wow! I can't believe that we are being over run with squash. Everywhere you look our squash plants are loaded down. We were able to take a bushel to the market to sell, this morning. They are wanting our tomatoes when they start to ripen. Yippie! I'm excited about being able to sell some of our vegetables.

On our way home, we stopped off at The Briar Patch (scroll down) not far from our home. We picked a gallon of blueberries. Yeah, I know that doesn't seem like a lot. But I had to make sure, that I was going to have enough room in the freezer. I did, so we will be going back in the next few days. This was the first time, we had picked at this farm, so I was surprised at the size of the bushes here. In the past, I had always picked at a farm that had young bushes, which were about waist high. Today, the bushes we picked from were about 8 feet tall. Monkey and I stood under the limbs and picked, while my husband stood on a bucket and picked from the top. This was a lot of fun. We also picked some cucumbers, that I will be making into jelly. I'll be working on the jelly in the morning, so I'll post pictures and directions on my recipe blog when I am finished.

This evening my son attended VBS again at my brother's church. We have many friends at the church, that we feel comfortable leaving him. While we were out, I was a "woman on a mission." I was searching for a new canner for my Mother. Her all time trusty dinosaur died about 2 years ago. Actually, she needs the rubber seal for the lid. She bought the canner from Sears when I was about 2 years old. Believe it or NOT, it seems that Sears can not locate anyone who still makes these. Oh Well!

Here are some pictures of what our garden looks like now.

3 Pumpkin hills that have now turned into a patch...

This is our largest baby pumpkin...It's the green thing that looks like a watermelon.

These are some of our grapes. I'm actually surprised at this year's out put. We've not had a lot in the past. This is just one of the vines.

This is some of the silk from the ears of corn. We planted Silver Queen - our favorite...

FOR TODAY... Wednesday, June 10,2009

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW... The sun is up and peaking through the trees.

I AM THINKING... About all the things that I have to do to day, since I spent most of yesterday working in the garden.

I AM THANKFUL FOR... Salvation! And not having to worry about losing it -ever.

FROM THE LEARNING ROOMS... No actual studying going on. I'm beginning to gather maps and charts off the internet, to go along with our history and science for the fall.

FROM THE KITCHEN... I have squash to freeze. Hopefully I'll be able to make some pumpkin bread to day.

I AM WEARING...still in my pj's

I AM CREATING... SEW many projects going on right now.

I AM GOING... To the grocery store, sometime today. We have Church tonight.

I AM READING... Homeschooling 101 by Mark and Christine Field and I'm finishing up More Charlotte Mason Education: A Homeschooling How To Manuel by Catherin Levison

I AM PRAYING ...About some prayer request for our family and deputation

I AM HEARING... Absolute peace and quiet, the men are sleeping in today.

AROUND THE HOUSE... There is a growing mountain of laundry to control today.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS... Is the sweet innocence of small children.

A FEW PLANS FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK ... Hopefully staying at home during the day, while attending the Jubilee at night.

HERE IS A PICTURE THOUGHT I AM SHARING... No picture today, but a verse -

II Chronicles. 15:7 Be ye strong therefore, and let not your hands be weak; for your work shall be rewarded.

A Busy Time and Catching Up

I have had a really busy day yesterday and today. I have been working in the garden along with slicing, chopping and freezing. I have put up 8 bags of squash and 1/4 cup of bell peppers. The bell pepper wasn't actually ready to pick, but it fell off in my hand when I touched it, so he went into a bag.

All of our tomato bushes are loaded down with tomatoes. We found small ears of corn on the stalks. We are still waiting on the outcome of our potatoes. Since we got a late start on planting them, we may be waiting until the middle of July for them. We have blooms on the beans and on the pumpkins along with several baby pumpkins. I also picked some green beans from our science project pot. But like I said in an earlier post, we will not be eating any of them.

Last night, we went to Brookton Baptist Church for their June Jubilee. This is one of our supporting churches and I think of them as a home away from home. The service was wonderful. I was blessed through the music. The church choir did a wonderful job. The Hendersons were there to sing. This is a Mother and her 2 special needs daughters from Alabama. They are the most humbling group of singers that I have heard.

I can say that I'm catching up on my sleep. Being out late last night and up early again today, I'm ready for bed now.

Grace

When I think about the word Grace, the story of the widow and her barrel of meal comes to mind.

I can only imagine what it must be like, to be so poor that all you have in the cabinets is a handful of meal. And when that is gone, there is nothing.

The Lord knew this lady’s situation and he used Elijah to provide for her and her young son. The widow explained that she only had enough to make one cake for herself and her son. Elijah told her that it was all going to work out, for her to go and prepare him something to eat. She did as she was told. She obeyed.

The Bible says, that the widow and her house ate for many days from that barrel.

Imagine one minute that barrel is almost empty and another minute there is meal still being scooped out. I wonder what went through the widow’s mind every time, she went to the barrel. Was she reminded of how God shed His grace on her?

Romans 1:5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name.

I think about all the times, that God has either supplied a need for me or protected me. I also think if it weren’t for His grace, I could be lost and on my way to hell.

As Christians, we are the recipients of God’s grace!
