5 Reasons to Study and Memorize God's Word

Spending time in God’s Word is important for all Christians. If we don’t read the Bible, we won’t know what is in there. We won’t know the history of the people who lived during the Old and New Testament days. We won't know what to be watching for as the Second Coming gets closer. There will be no blessings and there will be no learning. When we don’t read the Bible on a regular basis, we won’t retain those precious words that God has graciously shared with us. While there are many reasons, today I'm sharing 5 Reasons to Study and Memorize God's Word.

5 Reasons to Study and Memorize God's Word

Of all the Sunday school teachers I had while growing up, there is one who left a lasting impression on me.  She emphasized weekly on the importance of reading our Bibles on a daily basis. During a Sunday lesson, she told us to open our Bibles so we could follow along with her. When she asked how many had their Bibles she praised us for having them there. She went on to say, without opening your Bibles when the speaker is reading you don’t know whether they are reading from the Bible or making something up. One girl innocently said, but Mrs. Colwell, we trust you, you wouldn’t lie to us. With a smile Mrs. Colwell said, No, I would never lie to you intentionally, but there are those who will. I’ll never forget that little lesson I learned during my eighth-grade year. YOU. HAVE. TO BE. ALERT.

When I look back on the times when I was younger and didn’t open my Bible except for when I was at church, I think about all the moments I missed spending time with God. I think about the beautiful conversions we could have had and I missed them because I felt life was more important; more important than the God who created me, the God who sent his Son to die for me. LIFE. CANNOT. BE. MORE. IMPORTANT.

5 Reasons to Study and Memorize God’s Word

1. Happiness and Blessings

– Reading the Bible makes us happy. It gives us blessings while reading and finding those special little nuggets that are buried within the pages. (Psalm 1:2)

2. Lessons

–There are many life lessons in the Bible. When we read and meditate on them, those lessons will help us in our daily life. (Joshua 1:8)

3. Longevity

– My mother in law had Alzheimer’s. During the last months of her life, she became very agitated. During our visits, my husband would take his Bible so we could read to her. There were several passages she had memorized in the past and while we would read them to her, the horrible hold on her mind would loosen and she would be able to recite those verses and a peace would fall over her. Memorizing God’s Word keeps his words in our hearts anytime we need them. God’s Word stays with us even when our minds are not focused.(Psalm 37:31, Psalm 119:11, Psalm 119:16, Matthew 24:35)

4. Discernment

– We gain wisdom about the fundamentals of the Bible. We will be able to see those red flags of warning when a false doctrine is taught.(Deuteronomy 13:1-5, I John 4:1-6)

5. Shareable

– when we study the Bible and spend time with him we have knowledge of things we can share with others around us. For that family member, friend, or co-worker battling Satan in their marriage or another area of their life, we can help encourage them without saying the generic hang in there or I'm praying for you. (Galatians 6:2, I Thessalonians 5:11)

BONUS:

 6. Conversation

– God wants to talk to us. When we read the Bible, we allow the door to be open for God to talk to us through his words. No one likes to be ignored or to have someone refuse to talk to us;. God’s the same way. He wants us to spend time with him so he can whisper peace and contentment in our ear.(Genesis 3:8-9, II Timothy 3:16)

Do you read your Bible on a daily basis? If not, I'd like to challenge you to find a time during your day for seven days to read your Bible. At the end of seven days, you will notice a difference, I promise.
